Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education
This program addresses deficiencies in teacher education programs in rural Mississippi in preparing teacher candidates for the elementary classroom. One of the major necessities for the state of Mississippi is to develop logical methods that address the critical shortage of quality educators in public education. Beginning fall 2000, Northeast Mississippi Community College, Mississippi State University's Department of Curriculum and Instruction and Division of Academic Outreach and Continuing Education, and northeast region public schools launched the Northeast Pilot Project that combined the talent and resources necessary to answer this challenge. The project's focus was to provide higher education opportunities to students who, in the past, had been unable to attend due to the barriers of the traditional campus system. The project served as a model for current outreach efforts to rural student populations across the mid-south region of the United States.
