The Associate of Applied Science in Medical Transcription helps students gain the specialized skills and knowledge required to become certified professionals, online, on the own schedule.

To the responsibilities of medical transcriptionists belong turning doctors’ daily dictation tapes into clear, concise, print and electronic documents. Such records are the main reference for health care decisions made by patients and their physicians. They must be produced in a timely, accurate, and totally confidential manner.

Medical transcriptionists enjoy a taste of medical training and exposure to many different medical disciplines. They work in hospitals, physicians’ offices, and in a wide range of other medical facilities. More and more, work is being outsourced to independent contractors who operate their businesses from home. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for medical transcriptionists will grow faster than the national average through 2016, as America’s population continues to grow and age.

The focus in this program is placed on developing of self-discipline, strong language skills, typing accuracy and speed, and computer literacy. The program covers such fields of study as medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, drugs and pharmacology, and medical ethics. The students will also have the opportunity to develop communications skills such as writing, editing, proofreading, and office correspondence.

The student will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience along with academic instruction. This program is offered both online and at the Davenport campus. Students in the online program must complete an externship program, performing real transcription to gain on-the-job experience preferred by many employers.

This degree is for people who wish to begin a career in medical transcription, or for those who would like to enhance their current knowledge and skills.
