The University was founded in 1899. The land for the University was donated to the State of Illinois by Macomb's Freemasons . Macomb was in direct competition with Quincy, Illinois and other candidates as the site for a "western" university. The Illinois legislature selected Macomb as the location. The university believes strongly in the development of an international perspective. With the increasing interdependence of today's world, an international experience is no longer seen as an option, but is instead an integral part of the overall educational experience. Western offers 66 baccalaureate degrees, 16 post-baccalaureate certificates, 37 master’s degrees, 2 post-master’s certificates, and 1 doctoral degree.
