Graduate Certificate in Technical Communications
This is an online program that prepares students for a variety of positions in technical communication. It also helps current technical communicators update and expand their knowledge and skills, enabling them to move ahead in their profession. This program allows those new to the field to explore the possibility of a career in technical and professional communication. The certificate consists of 18 credit hours (six 3-semester hour courses). Certificate students complete all of the courses online. Courses from other institutions cannot be counted towards the graduate certificate in technical communication. Those students who take two courses each semester can complete the course requirements in three semesters. The following three courses (9 credit hours total) should be taken first: Technical Writing and Editing; Foundations of Graphics; Information Design. These courses are offered each regular semester, so it is possible to begin the certificate program in both the Fall Semester and in the Spring Semester. The remaining three courses (9 credit hours total) should be selected from the graduate courses that are offered online by the English, Technical Communication, and Media Arts Department during any given semester.Students who have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication program are eligible to apply for one of the advanced certificates. Completion of both the Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication and one of the advanced graduate certificates also results in fulfilling the requirements for the MSIDC degree.
