Special education teachers work with children who have a variety of disabilities such as specific learning disabilities, speech or language impairments, emotional disturbance, autism, or traumatic brain injury. The majority of special education teachers work at the elementary, middle, and secondary school levels utilizing various techniques to promote learning which can include individualized instruction, problem-solving assignments, and small group work. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the number of special education teachers is expected to increase by 15 percent from 2006 and 2016 which is faster than the average for all occupations. Also, continued increases in the number of special needs students will generate a greater need for special education teachers. Several school districts also report difficulty in finding sufficient numbers of qualified teachers resulting in excellent prospects for those trained to work with special needs children.
The Rowan Online Teacher of Students with Disabilities graduate endorsement (TOSD-GE) program is designed with coursework and field experiences that foster an understanding of students with special needs and provide the pedagogical skills to accommodate them. This program is ideal for those who possess a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) or Standard Certification and need to become certified to teach students with disabilities. Due to certain requirements this program is meant for candidates within the state of New Jersey. While most coursework is done in an online environment, there may be some assignments that require students to be away from the computer.
