Ivy Tech was established in 1963 as Indiana Vocational Technical College, with the aim to provide technical and vocational education for different industries. It was rechartered as a system of vocational technical schools in 2005. Ivy Tech's name was officially changed to Ivy Tech State College in 1995.

Online Learning
Ivy Tech is committed to removing the barriers between students and their education. Ivy Tech now offers a list of programs via distance. Almost all of them are online degree programs, except one program, paralegal studies - it is available via two-way video.
