Ivy Tech was established in 1963 as Indiana Vocational Technical College, with the aim to provide technical and vocational education for different industries. It was rechartered as a system of vocational technical schools in 2005. Ivy Tech's name was officially changed to Ivy Tech State College in 1995.

Ivy Tech Community College is considered to be the nation's largest state-wide community college providing quality education to more than 150,000 students a year.

Online Learning
Ivy Tech is committed to removing the barriers between students and their education. Whether they want to add a course to their schedule while making fewer trips to campus, take a course to transfer to another institution, or weave college courses in between work and family commitments, Ivy Tech has online solutions that will work for  busy people.

Ivy Tech now offers a list of programs via distance. Almost all of them are online degree programs, except one program, paralegal studies - it is available via two-way video.
