Public Accountant Examination (CPA)

Administered by the Board of Examiners of the American Institute for Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination (CPA) is designed to test your technical knowledge and your ability to apply that knowledge to practical problems. It also evaluates your analytical skills, as well as your ability to communicate in English.

Varying factors can determine how much technical accounting material a candidate has attained before taking the CPA exam. And it is unlikely that even the most academically prepared student will be able to retain all the information that is covered in the exam. Candidates for the CPA exam will have to make tough decisions about how to allocate their study-time to get the maximum benefit.

Throughout the exam, questions will test how well you can apply theoretical CPA information to professional situations. These will require practical knowledge such as recording transactions, preparing financial statements, and developing solutions for realistic situations.

Analytical skills are required to evaluate why a certain course of action is appropriate or necessary. These questions determine whether the candidate will be able to make effective decisions in the workplace.

Finally, the essay questions will evaluate your ability to communicate accounting ideas correctly and effectively. A necessary aspect of the CPA's job is the capacity to both get facts from and convey information to supervisors, co-workers and clients.

Invest as much time and effort into studying for the CPA as you can. This test is notoriously difficult. The more you study, the better your chances will be of passing all four sections.

The CPA Examination is a 14-hour exam with four sections. Three sections: Auditing & Attestation (4.5 hours), Financial Accounting & Reporting (4 hours), and Regulation (3 hours) will include much of the content covered in the current paper-based CPA Examination. The fourth section, Business Environment & Concepts (2.5 hours), is new. This section covers knowledge of the general business environment and business concepts.
