The University was founded in 1899. The land for the University was donated to the State of Illinois by Macomb's Freemasons . Macomb was in direct competition with Quincy, Illinois and other candidates as the site for a "western" university. The Illinois legislature selected Macomb as the location. The university believes strongly in the development of an international perspective.  With the increasing interdependence of today's world, an international experience is no longer seen as an option, but is instead an integral part of the overall educational experience. Western offers 66 baccalaureate degrees, 16 post-baccalaureate certificates, 37 master’s degrees, 2 post-master’s certificates, and 1 doctoral degree.

Western Illinois University offers a caring, supportive learning environment with the advantages of a large public university - strong faculty, state of the art technology and facilities, and a wide range of academic and extra-curricular opportunities - in an atmosphere free from distractions. Western Illinois University is composed of four academic colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business & Technology, Education & Human Services, and Fine Arts & Communication, in addition to an Honors College the School of Extended Studies, which includes nontraditional programs.

I liked how the art computers were set up with adobe cs4 on most computers so you can work on projects outside of class. The lab is available even when a class is present as long as your considerate of their class time. I've known students without a laptop and they did just fine using the lab's computers for projects.

As a student at Western Illinois University, I can say that the education received there is very personal. I am an English Major with a Creative Writing Minor and feel like every professor I have is willing to take time to explain things to me and help me whenever I need. They encourage students to do their best and help in any reasonable way possible. I have had other classes and get much the same feeling for the professors teaching them. The communications and theater departments are especially friendly, as well. If you want to you or your child's education to be in good hands, try WIU.

I transfered into Western halfway through my sophmore year. I really like it here. I have found that many of the students are a little biggoted but, that mostly comes from their lack of experience.
One thing that I love about it here is that Macomb is a very nice small town. Unlike in many college towns the residents of the city are very nice and polite to the students. I also love my instructors. Since this is not a very big school the class size is small.
If you are planning to major in Education or Law Enforcement this is definatly the school for you. None of the majors here are "bad". You shouldn't come to this school if you are one of those people who likes to go out all the time. Also if you come from a big city you might have a hard time being comfortable here, there isn't much to do. We go to the Wal Mart for fun (I'm not joking).
All in all this is a good school.
