The University if Pittsburgh, often referred to as Pitt, is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the US, which are continuously charted. The University had several names in the past and was a private institution before Pitt was a private institution until it became part of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education in 1966.
Pitt has five regional campuses. The main campus is located in Pittsburgh’s historic Oakland neighborhood. The other four campuses are situated in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown, and Titusville.
Academics
The University of Pittsburgh is not only one of the oldest universities in America, but it is also among the most distinguished comprehensive universities in the US, offering a great number of high-quality programs in the arts and sciences and professional fields.
In addition to great on-campus learning opportunities, students may pursue their graduate degree, a post-baccalaureate certificate or general education courses online or through a combination of web-based and residential learning. Currently, there is an online Master’s degree in Library Science offered through the School of Information Sciences. Moreover, in fall 2009, other two online programs will be offered: Master of English Education and Master of Science in Nursing for the Certified Nurse Leader. Undergraduate online education options include a Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Supervisor of Special Education and online courses in General Studies offered by the College of General Studies.
Distance education courses and degrees have the same quality and level of instruction as on-campus degrees. They allow students to pursue the degree and/or improve their professional skills and knowledge in the field of their choice from the comfort of their homes.
Financial Aid
While most students apply to several universities at the same time, the application in Pitt has been simplified to help students go through the process with ease. The University of Pittsburgh operates on a rolling admission policy. Moreover, students apply to Pitt and for the financial aid at the same time. Financial support offers a number of options for students who are eligible: grants, scholarships, federal work study and employment, student loans and some other student employment opportunities.
