A small college of this type has given a network of people to work with even if it is a thin network.....their is a bond with the students who have attended this college.

The Stephens' experience is one I will treasure throughout my lifetime. The insight and knowledge I have gained from the faculty is without comparison. As a transfer student from the MU-Columbia, I know the difference between a mediocre education and an oustanding learning institution. Stephens offers the very best. It's your own fault if you do not take advantage of the opportunities Stephens can provide.

I would say that Stephens is truly a place where you can get a good education if you're willing to build one for yourself. It is true that there are many drawbacks to the college. The administration is horrible. The small size does limit class choices. The library is also small. However, if you're a motivated student with a clear educational goal, it could be the best place in the world for you. I was able to build my own major, cross-register at the nearby University of Missouri, use the university's gigantic library for most of my research, study abroad, have two fabulous internships, keep the same great work-study job for the entire four years, and meet some incredibly intelligent faculty who really did care about what I was learning. Of course there are some faculty who are not the greatest. But once you figure out whose classes you want to be in, you're set. The class sizes are incredibly small – five, six people at the low end, and the biggest class I had was about thirty people. So there's a lot of thought-provoking discussion, if you're willing to open your mouth and not just sit in the back of the class and sleep. There are no TAs, only full professors, and you're on a first-name basis with them. Because of the small enrollment, these teachers know you well--your strengths and weaknesses, what motivates you, even if you're having a bad day. i know that there are a lot of annoying students at Stephens who don't care about learning and are there because their parents could afford to send them to a private school. But there are also a lot of students there from all over the country, on academic scholarships, like I was. If you want a small, tightly-knit academic community, and are willing to take your education into your own hands and really succeed, Stephens is the place for you. You will get out of it what you put into it.
