Firstly Spertus College was founded as The College of Jewish Studies in 1924. Later in 1993 it officially became The Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, reflecting its multidisciplinary identity. The Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies is one of the leading Jewish organizations in Chicago, Illinois. Students can earn advanced degree or broaden their Jewish knowledge through its innovative Distance Learning programs or at Spertus College’s Chicago Campus.
The main goal of the program is to provide a solid foundation on training Jewish educators. Spertus also offers public programs, lectures, and performances on a wide range of subjects including Jewish religion, history, culture, and the arts. Language studies include Hebrew, Yiddish and Aramaic. The higher degree offered in the school is the Doctoral degree. The maximum program length is more than 4 year.

Spertus College offers distance learning possibility. Distance learning programs are convenience and flexibility of home study. Multi-faceted program is delivery (including course packages of audio/video tapes, intensive week-long summer seminars in Chicago, independent study, and directed reading courses).
Distance Learning is currently available for the Master of Science in Jewish Studies, the Master of Science in Jewish Education, the Doctor of Jewish Studies, and the Doctor of Science in Jewish Studies programs. Through distance learning options the Spertus College serves students in 36 U.S. states and six foreign countries.
Spertus College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of College and Schools (NCA). College received its accreditation in 1971.
