Snead State was founded in 1898 as Boaz Seminary. It is the oldest College in the Alabama College System to award associate degrees. In 1935, Snead State College was chartered by the state of Alabama and began to function as a junior college. Later in 1967, the college was brought under the control of the Alabama State Board of Education. And at the same year it was renamed as Snead State Junior College. The name of the college was changed Several times. Today, Snead State Community College, serves more than 3,000 students from all over northern Alabama as well as surrounding states.
The purpose of the Snead State Community College is to support, assist, and foster the educational and public service programs and activities of the College. The school operates on a semester system and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Snead State offers certificates and associate’s degrees. Special programs include accelerated program, evening program, honors program, two-year transfer program and dual enrollment of high school students. Moreover, the programs of study at the college include Associate in Science Degree, Associate in Applied Science Degree and Associate in Occupational Technology Degree. There are numerous subjects under the Associate in Science Degree which the students can study. These subjects include Accounting, Adult Education, Advertising, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Science, Agriscience Education, Criminology, Forestry and Human Services. The College also has the Statewide Articulation Reporting System (STARS) that is a web-accessible database system that provides guidance and direction for prospective transfer students in Alabama.
