Northern Illinois University opened its door in 1899 as the Northern Illinois State Normal School entirely to prepare college-educated teachers. It got its current name in 1957.

Since that time the university has grown into a world-class university that attracts students from all over the globe while still serving the northern Illinois region. NIU is deeply committed to preparing teachers and providing an excellent and affordable higher education to Illinois families.

Academics

Many of NIU’s academic programs are nationally accredited for meeting the highest standards of academic quality and rigor, including business, engineering, nursing, visual and performing arts, and all teacher certification programs.

Online Learning
NIU's online courses blend the best of traditional education with innovative technology to bring students a creative, high-quality learning experience. Just like in a traditional course, students will have an instructor, fellow students, study materials, papers and tests. Learners may also use a blended model of online instruction, which combine face-to-face meetings and field trips with online activities that may include lectures, group projects, role-playing exercises and learning games. Some instructors schedule regular chat sessions where the whole class is online together.

Faculty of the university are world-class and often world-renowned teachers and researchers, artists and scientists. They publish articles, edit journals, write books and produce films. They guide students on adventures in the classroom and around the world, engaging them in the practice of asking questions, searching for answers, analyzing data and documenting results.

Financial Aid
The Financial Aid office will help students to pursue their college education by helping them and their families meet educational expenses that they are not able to meet through their own resources.
