Certificate Program in Hazardous Materials Management
The Hazardous Materials Operations course is intended to provide emergency response personnel with basic skills and knowledge necessary to safely and effectively manage on-scene operations at a hazardous materials incident. Included in this course are basic hazard recognition, risk assessment, and hazardous materials terminology. Provides basic information critical to planning and implementing emergency response strategies including management strategies, decontamination and containment, and doffing and donning of personal protective equipment. This course emphasizes the characteristics of hazardous materials incidents that require modifications to traditional emergency response and the preparatory actions that should be taken to respond safely and effectively to hazardous materials incidents. The student will be able to explain safety principles and concepts; list classifications, identification, verification, and actions to take at an incident; explain chemistry of hazardous materials; demonstrate hazard and risk assessment and use of personal protective equipment; and explain emergency decontamination.
