Established by the Vincentians in 1898, the university takes its name from the 17th century French priest, Saint Vincent de Paul, who valued philanthropy. Nowadays DePaul is a member of the Big East Conference.

Recent tuition increases have been held to between 3 and 5 percent, less than the majority of peer institutions. Moreover, the university offers a full range of financial aid opportunities to ensure access to a diverse population of students.
The Office of Financial Aid helps make college affordable. Financial Aid is offered in the following types: grants, scholarships, loans and work study opportunities. Nearly 70 percent of all students are awarded with financial aid.
