Abilene Christian University (ACU) was established by A.B. Barret as Childers' Classical Institute in 1906. It is located on five acres of land on North First Street in Abilene, Texas. During the first year the school offered only primary and secondary classes. The institution officially became ACU in 1976.
The university enrolls about 4,700 students that are served by more than 220 full-time faculty members. ACU includes a number of colleges, such as of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Biblical Studies, Education and Human Services, the Graduate School, the School of Information Technology and Computing, the Graduate School of Theology, the School of Social Work and the Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing. In actual fact, Abilene Christian University is one of the largest private universities in the Southwest.
