Art for Children This course focuses on appropriate teaching methods and strategies for teaching art (studio, art history, aesthetic, and criticism), artistic development of children, and curriculum, instructional, and organization strategies for the art classroom. Teaching of Reading This course studies the materials and methods used in teaching reading in elementary grades. Teaching Reading in the Content Areas This course addresses specific ways teachers can help students improve skills at reading in content areas. Issues and Trends in Reading Instruction This course provides intensive study of significant issues and current trends in reading on all instructional levels. Secondary School Curriculum For secondary school principals, teachers, and superintendents, this course presents trends in curricular change and methods of curricular investigation. Seminar in Learning, Teaching and Curriculum (Teaching of Reading Comprehension) This course reviews the most current research on reading comprehension. Particular emphasis is given to classroom applications and the role of the teacher. Specific techniques for improving reading comprehension are discussed and illustrated in the context of the typical classroom setting. While designed primarily for elementary teachers, the concepts and techniques taught in this course also can be applied to middle- and senior-high level reading programs. The Community College This course offers an overview of the community college. Topics covered include historical roots and development of the community college: its organization and governance, finance, students, faculty, administrators, curriculum, and social role, as well as recurring and emerging issues. Career Explorations: A Career Planning Course for Adults This course, written by educators and career planning professionals, is designed for adults interested in their own career planning. Through readings and exercises, students learn about adult developmental issues and about dealing with life's transitions. They assess barriers to their career planning; determine their interests, skills, and work values; and explore career options and lifestyle patterns. Students learn survival and enhancement skills for college; resume writing; interviewing skills; and job-hunting strategies. Adults taking this course receive personalized comments and feedback on each lesson from career planning professionals. Child Development The psychological, intellectual, social and physical development of children is studied in this course. Seminar in Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology (Youth Violence and Bullying: Prevention and Reduction) This course will familiarize you with the major perspectives on violence in schools. The course will also present effective strategies for violence prevention both within the school and in collaboration with the community at large. In addition, you will be encouraged to apply the course concepts to your own life experiences. Introduction to Educational Statistics This course introduces statistical techniques employed in education, including descriptive statistics, correlation, simple regression and hypothesis testing. Seminar in Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology (Exploring Mental Health Issues in the Schools) Recognizing the epidemic of increased stress among youth in today's classroom, this course is an introduction to the mental health challenges of all elementary and secondary students. The focus of the course is on prevention of real classroom concerns, such as recognizing the behavioral symptoms of poor self-concepts, anger, family problems, ADHD and bullying. The course will enable the professional the opportunity to apply practical and effective strategies for helping students be successful members of the school. Foundations of Educational and Psychological Measurement Basic principles of educational and psychological measurement, which include test construction, validity, reliability, item analysis, and derived scores, are addressed. Note: Graduate standing required. Seminar in Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology (Child and Adolescent Mental Health) The course investigates specific aberrations of normal development that impact children and their families in their home, school, and community. The content will include definitions of childhood psychiatric disorders, prevalence, gender, co-morbidity, developmental course, and intervention. The course also includes applications of intervention and prevention, with a focus on a multidisciplinary team approach involving teachers, counselors, school nurses, school psychologists, social workers, families, and outside providers. A particular emphasis will center on working with families and school personnel to promote wellness in children and adolescents. Introduction to Special Education Introductory overview of the field of special education; historical developments, characteristics of special populations, and compliance with state and federal regulations. Introduction to Special Education for Regular Educators Introduction to the field of special education for other majors; survey of exceptionalities with emphasis on the mainstreaming exceptional students.
