Designing Accessible Course Content Using Familiar Software Tools This new course is created for instructors, instructional design staff and anyone else creating course content who has limited technical know-how and who wants to make their course materials accessible without having to learn specialized software or become a technology guru. It is not a theoretical or principles course; it is practical and hands-on. Barrier-free Information Technology Syllabus This month-long online course, given bimonthly, provides an overview of the topic of adaptive computing technology and is ideal for administrators, teachers, librarians, rehab consultants, computer support staff, ADA compliance officers Disabled student services staff, employers, human resource staff and service providers. Today’s distributed computer environment means that providing support for the on-site technology needs of students with disabilities is an institution-wide responsibility. This course is designed to provide the broad knowledge of accessible information technology, the law and of student technological and pedagogical needs to facilitate such institutional planning. (This course is required for the EASI/USM certificate.) Beginners Barrier-free Web Design Syllabus This month-long course, given bimonthly, is designed to demonstrate how to create web pages that are both visually appealing to all users and fully accessible to users with print disabilities. The class does not teach HTML as such but focuses on web design features relevant for accessibility. It is ideal for designers who are not advanced web experts, for administrators wanting to understand web accessibility issues, for faculty, disabled student services staff, librarians, businesses and instructional technology staff. The course is based on the Section 508 standards and on the work of the Web Accessibility Initiative. (This course is required for the EASI/USM certificate.) Advanced Barrier-free Web Design Syllabus The complexity of the Web has dictated the need for an advanced Web course that addresses new design intricacies. Advancements in Web technologies can close the door for many users with disabilities, but in most cases, this situation is not necessary. This is an eight lesson course that goes beyond dealing with graphics, tables, frames and the common access features. Advanced features like media, captioning, java applets and other popular sophisticated tools will be addressed. This is ideal for experienced web designers with knowledge of HTML, for computer staff, for information technology staff, for instructional staff. (This course is optional for the EASI/USM certificate.) Barrier-free E-learning Syllabus E-learning is the fastest growing movement in today's education world. University, business and public schools all are adopting one or more forms of this technology for delivering education and training. One of the results of the rapidity of this explosive growth is that little attention has been paid to making these technologies accessible to people with various disabilities. This eight-lesson course deals both with the requirements of an accessible interface and with insights on how to make course content itself more accessible. This is ideal for faculty, informational and instructional technologists, disabled student staff, human resource staff, librarians, rehab consultants, ADA compliance officers and administrators. (This course is optional for the EASI/USM certificate.) Accessible Internet Multimedia Production Syllabus Educational and other information providers on the Internet are increasingly using multimedia as a means to disseminate information. Multimedia poses special problems but also unique opportunities for reaching people with disabilities. Providing transcriptions, captions and descriptive video synchronized with the media is a real challenge. This course will give step-by-step instruction in how and when to provide transcriptions and synchronized captions. This course will be good for web masters, information technologists, instructional technologists, disabled student staff, human recourse staff, librarians and more. This course is optional for the EASI/USM certificate.) Train the Trainer Syllabus Many organizations are providing limited training on adaptive technology to their customers, students or staff in a variety of different software packages. They do not plan to provide depth training, and they only expect to provide training on a specific application periodically. They are concerned with how to prepare some staff person to provide this basic training on many applications and only at infrequental intervals. Train the Trainer is intended to provide basic know-how on several adaptive technologies, provide tools to help the trainer refresh their memories quickly as well as giving teaching tools and hand-outs for the end learner. Learning Disabilities and Information Technology Syllabus The largest disability group in society today consists of people with various learning disabilities. Adaptive technologies which were primarily created for the needs of other populations have turned out to provide support of people with learning disabilities. Low End Assistive Technologies This new course will shortly have a syllabus, description, schedule and registration here. Many assistive technologies are expensive. The low end substitutes we discuss here will not replace them. However, for someone with a temporary disability, these are important. Also, for someone with limited finances and no institution to help, these less costly alternatives will fill a temporary gap. For more information visit easi.cc |
